Unless you frequently replace the filter or thoroughly clean it, you risk unsafe bacterial buildup. In some filtering systems, the bacteria multiply so rapidly that within a couple of weeks, the number of microorganisms that flow into your drinking glass may exceed the quantity that would have traveled unhindered through your tap.
Even if a filter is changed frequently, there remains the question of the effectiveness of the various brands. With most, the water gushes through the filter too quickly to trap as many microorganisms as the unwary buyer is led to expect. Perhaps an even more important issue is whether your water supply is as dangerously contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms, additives, impurities, and others. Check the local facts before investing in an expensive filter apparatus.
