Crunchy Apple Pie Recipe

Ingredients : Serves 4-6

450 g/1 lb cooking (tart) apples, peeled, cored and sliced
30 ml/2 tbsp orange juice
15 ml/1 tbsp caster (superfine) sugar

100 g/4 oz/0.5 cup butter or margarine

175 g/6 oz/1.5 cups plain (all-purpose) flour
A pinch of salt
45 ml/3 tbsp cold water
25 g/1 oz/0.25 cup ground almonds
15 ml/1 tbsp clear honey
15 ml/1 tbsp hot water
Custard Sauce, to serve

Method :

Arrange the apples on the base of a greased 20 cm/8 in ovenproof dish and sprinkle with the orange juice and sugar. Rub the butter or margarine into the flour and salt until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs, then mix in enough of the water to make a smooth pastry (paste). Roll out on a lightly floured surface to fit the dish and place on top of the apples. Mix together the almonds, honey and hot water and spread evenly over the pastry. Bake in a preheated oven at 190C/375F/gas mark 5 for 30 minutes until the top is crisp. Serve hot with Custard Sauce.
